“We have fallen ill through sin; let us be healed through repentance. Yet repentance without fasting is powerless. Therefore, set yourself aright before God through fasting.” (Saint Basil the Great)

On Monday, February 23, the first day of Great Lent, His Eminence Vladimir, Metropolitan of Chișinău and All Moldova, officiated the service of the Great Compline and the first part of the Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete at the Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord” in Chișinău.

During the Great Compline, the concelebrating clergy read a portion of the more than 250 hymns composed by Saint Andrew of Crete, distinguished by their remarkable theological and spiritual beauty. This Canon is read during the first four days of the first week of Great Lent, as well as at the Matins service on Wednesday evening of the fifth week, when the clergy read in full the composition of Saint Andrew of Crete.

At the Metropolitan Cathedral, the service of the Great Compline with the Canon is celebrated from Monday to Thursday, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Also during this week, on Wednesday and Friday, the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts will be celebrated.
