“He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life…” — The Divine Liturgy on Holy Thursday at the Metropolitan Cathedral

13

“The Divine Liturgy is a sacred work for the preparation of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, to be given in Holy Communion to all the faithful. This is the entire purpose and meaning of the Liturgy: the communion of the faithful.” (Saint Symeon of Thessalonica)

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Vladimir, on the morning of Thursday, April 9, 2026, His Grace Siluan, Bishop of Orhei and Vicar of the Metropolis of Moldova, celebrated the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Chișinău.

Holy and Great Thursday brings to remembrance the profoundly significant events that took place before the Passion of the Lord: the washing of the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Mystical Supper, the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the betrayal of the Savior by Judas.

On this day, the special Proskomedia is also performed, during which the Holy Lamb is prepared for the communion of the faithful, especially for the sick and the newly baptized, throughout the entire year.

The Holy Eucharist, instituted by the Savior at the Mystical Supper, remains the center of Christian life: “Take, eat; this is My Body… Drink of it, all of you; this is My Blood…” Through this Mystery, the faithful partake of the Body and Blood of the Lord for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life, as the Savior Himself says: “He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life” (John 6:54).

Thus, Holy and Great Thursday becomes a call to communion with Christ, to humility and sacrificial love, urging us to approach Holy Communion with a pure heart and to live more deeply the mystery of God’s love for mankind.
