Biography:

Serghie (Leapidevschi Nicolae Iacob), Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, was born on May 9, 1820, in Tula, in the family of a schoolteacher. His feast day is September 25.

He studied at the Theological Seminary in Tula.

In 1844, he graduated from the Theological Academy in Moscow.

On June 24, he was tonsured a monk; on July 20 – ordained hierodeacon; on August 6 of the same year – ordained hieromonk; and on November 30, he was admitted to the Theological Academy in Moscow.

On October 25, 1845, he received the degree of Master in Theology.

On April 23, 1848 – appointed inspector of the Theological Academy in Moscow.

On January 15, 1850 – received the rank of archimandrite.

On March 20, 1851 – appointed extraordinary professor of Orthodox Theology and Pastoral Studies.

On October 4, 1857 – appointed Rector of the Theological Academy in Moscow.

On April 18, 1858 – appointed abbot of Vysokopetrovsk Monastery, and from August 8, 1859 – abbot of Zaikonospassk Monastery.

On January 1, 1861 – consecrated Bishop of Kursk and Belgorod.

On January 11, 1880 – Archbishop of Kazan and Sviyazhsk.

On August 21, 1882 – Archbishop of Chișinău.

In 1883 – elected honorary member of the Theological Academy of Kazan.

In 1884 – elected honorary member of the Theological Academy of Moscow.

On April 9, 1889 – decorated with the Diamond Cross to be worn on his cope.

On January 12, 1891 – appointed Archbishop of Kherson and Odessa.

On May 14, 1896 – decorated with the Diamond Cross to be worn on the mitre.

On May 15, 1893 – became a member of the Holy Synod.

On August 9, 1893 – Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna and of the Holy Trinity Lavra, and archimandrite.

He led the Metropolis for five years.

He passed away on February 11, 1898, in Saint Petersburg.
