Biography:
Nicodim Munteanu, born Nicolae Munteanu (born December 6, 1864, Pipirig, Neamț County – died February 27, 1948, Bucharest), was the second Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church (1939–1948) and an honorary member of the Romanian Academy.
Education and Ecclesiastical Career:
- 1882–1890 – “Veniamin” Seminary in Iași
- 1890–1895 – Theological Academy in Kiev (graduated 1895)
- 1894 – Tonsured a monk at Neamț Monastery, taking the name Nicodim
- 1894 – Ordained hierodeacon in Iași
- 1896 – Ordained hieromonk
- 1895 – Preacher at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Iași
- 1898–1902 – Elevated to archimandrite and appointed vicar of the Metropolis of Moldavia
- 1902–1909 – Vicar of the Diocese of the Lower Danube
- 1908–1909 – Director of the “St. Andrew” Seminary in Galați
- 1909 – Vicar bishop of the Metropolis of Moldavia with the title “Băcăuanul”
- February 18, 1912 – Elected bishop of Huși (enthroned March 3, 1912)
- June 1918 – December 1919 – Acting Archbishop of Chișinău and Hotin
- December 31, 1923 – Retired from the see of Huși
- 1924–1935 – Abbot of Neamț Monastery
- October 5, 1918 – Honorary member of the Romanian Academy
- 1920 – “Doctor honoris causa” of the Faculty of Theology in Cernăuți
On January 23, 1935, he was elected Metropolitan of Moldavia (enthroned February 4, 1935). On June 30, 1939, he was elected Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church (enthroned July 5, 1939), shepherding the Church until his death.
