COSMA (Petrovici) (June 1937 – February 1938)

Born: January 11, 1873, in Brăila – Cosma Petrovici
Education: Studied at the Theological Seminary in Galaţi (1888–1892) and at the “Veniamin” Seminary in Iași (1892–1896), then at the Faculty of Theology in Cernăuţi (1896–1900)

He served as deacon at the Cathedral in Dorohoi (1897–1902), then as priest (1902–1913) and protopope in Dorohoi (1902–1909). He was a member of the Superior Church Consistory (1909–1913), and later priest and religion teacher in Pomârla, Botoșani County (1913–1917).

Widowed in 1917, he was elected vicar of the Archdiocese of Iași in 1923 and consecrated bishop with the title “Botoșăneanul” (July 9, 1923). He became Bishop of the Lower Danube (elected June 24, 1924; enthroned June 29, 1924), shepherding the diocese until his retirement (August 29, 1947).

He served as acting Archbishop of Chișinău (June 1937 – February 1938).

He completed the construction of the monumental church at Celic Dere Monastery, consecrated in 1932. He initiated and built a girls’ boarding school (1928–1939), inaugurated the new building of the “St. Andrew” Seminary in Galaţi (May 11, 1925), and initiated the publication of church periodicals Căminul (1925–1941) and Vestitorul (1926–1949).

He passed away on December 16, 1948, in Galaţi.
